I have heard it said that opinion is the weakest form of argument. If indeed opinion is weighed against fact, of course that's valid. It makes sense when no plausible doubts or subjective possiblities are applicable. Math falls into that category - either it's right or it's wrong. Three plus three is always six, but how many arguments when broken down can truly be called "fact?"
George Has An Opinion blogs are based on opinions I have developed through experience, observation, thoughtful reflection, and education in its many forms. Many are a combination of those things. I do not now, and hopefully never will, think I have all the answers. Frankly, I find the idea that anyone, regardless of how intelligent, educated or world wise they may be, thinking they know everything, preposterous. The most learned people on earth, even were they to live for 125 years, could not gain such an unrealistic level of information. It has been my experience that the more one learns, the more one sees there is to learn.
I accept that some of my opinions could turn out to be misguided. For example, if I were to make a comment regarding something like correct boxing stance, yet I had only ever watched boxing on TV and never tried it myself, it is certainly possible I could accurately explain how to position oneself; however it is also possible, perhaps even probable, if I were to learn in person from a coach I would find out about nuances and other factors I may not have considered. Conversely, if I have learned an unorthodox method, that when tested proves successful, then my claims are still valid regardless of any formal training. Therefore the mode, or style of learning becomes relevant, only if I am not successful, and since we cannot know every outcome before they happen, I am open to new and varied perspectives that may validate, enhance or debunk my previous opinions.
A multitude of situations in life can be seen from a variety of vantage points and still be reasonable, legitimate, and for lack of a better word, "right." No one can claim another person's taste in music is "wrong" simply because they don't agree. What we can do, is enlighten one another by sharing our own perceptions and experiences. Philosophers build on theories set forth by those who came before them. We can always stand to increase our awareness, and working together has a tendancy to bring about the best results.
My blogs are intended to be thought provoking. They are intended to stimulate independent reflection. My opinions may, at times, challenge current trends and perspectives when I see things differently. Critical thinking is one of our most valuable assets as human beings. Deciding for ourselves what we think is an important freedom we all deserve.
I am an egalitarian. I believe specific gifts and talents can sometimes exceed those of others in any given category, such as sports or academics, however, that does alter the fact that I consider all humans equal. I believe each of us has a special ability, contribution, and/or purpose. Each life is meaningful in its own way. In my opinion, things like class, race, sexual orientation and so on, are ridiculous reasons for people to be at odds. The idea that any group, or person is more relevant, or more worthy than another, is nothing more than human construct. It is illogical and short-sighted to think that way and it does no good for any of us.
I also abide by the principle that everyone has the right to exercise their free choice. Consequences may follow for those who choose to do harm to others, and as I see it, that is as it should be. That said, the freedom to choose, the freedom to speak our truths, and to be authentic in who we are should always be protected. Therefore, opinions are welcome here. I'm interested in starting conversations. It may be redundant following my introduction blog to say what I am not interested in, is abusive or rude diatribe. Comments that agree with or oppose what I, or anyone else in the comments section say, are welcome, as long as they are respectfully delivered.
There is too much negativity between people with different points of view. It doesn't have to be that way. Allow yourself to be invigorated by debate. Allow yourself the option to change your mind if a persuasive argument leads you to a new perspective. Maybe you will return to your original position, but like I used to tell my kids when they were small, (as I'm guessing many parents have) don't knock what you haven't tried.
My hope is that my words will inspire a deeper level of thinking, (an almost lost art in our go-go-go world) and ideally shine light on some things that perhaps ought to be reviewed. I've done a lot of reflecting, and I find I have a lot to say. I hope to create an environment here on my site that fosters growth for myself and my readers, as we can all stand to 'learn something new everyday,' in my opinion.
